Day 5 - Four Feelings

Context for Day 5

The Four Flavours of Love, Pain & your Radiance

It's all the same life force.
We have feelings for a reason.
They are our first language, yet most of us have forgotten how to listen.

Long before we could speak, we communicated through our feelings. As newborn babies, this was the language between us and our parents.

When a baby is angry, their cry has a particular quality. They are communicating, "Something isn't working."

When they are scared, their body and voice change. They are saying, "I need safety."

When they are sad, they long for connection and comfort.

When they are joyful, they relax, play, explore, and communicate, "Yes, this works. More of this."

Watch a young child and you'll notice they move through all four feelings quickly and naturally. They don't get stuck. They express, they feel, and then they move on.

Many adults call this a tantrum.

Next time you're around children, become curious. Notice which feelings they are allowed to express, which feelings are welcomed, and which ones are shut down. This is where we begin learning what is acceptable and what isn't.

Very few of us had parents who knew how to fully hold space for feelings. They could only meet us with the emotional capacity they had themselves.

So, like them, we learned to disconnect and created emotions instead of feeling our feelings fully.
